148 MPH Wind Gust At Squaw Valley, CA

Squaw Valley Ski Resort

With Ski Rex headquarters being located not far from Mt. Washington in NH, hearing about high winds is nothing new.  Mt. Washington still holds the U.S. record. But, anytime the winds get to almost 150 MPH, that's something to talk about.

During this past weekend, a 148.4 MPH gust blew across Squaw Valley Peak. As one might think this kind of wind shut down lifts for a while. This was also part of the storm system that brought more than two feet of snow to parts of the Sierra Nevada range.

Squaw Valley ski resort records 148 mph wind gust

Howling winds whipped ridge tops around the Tahoe Basin Sunday as a fierce winter storm swept the northern Sierra Nevada mountain range. A gust of 148.4 mph at a Squaw Valley peak was among the strongest. To put that in perspective, 140-mph winds have been known to pick up and hurl baseball-sized rocks.
