Of all the places you might hear about in the story of a family ski vacation, Kashmir is one that will rarely come up, if it comes up at all. Just that alone makes this story worth reading.

From a story on The New York Times site, Jeffery Gettleman tells the story of taking his family into the Kashmir to ski the Himalayas at Gulmarg.

Gulmarg is place I have heard of a few times over the years, though I don't know much about it. That is the second fact that makes this story so intriguing. It is the first hand account of an American family skiing in place Americans are encouraged to think twice about visiting.

However, after reading this, I would visit the area without second guessing the decision. The author tells such a great story of his experience with, not only the mountain, but with the people and the culture. It almost makes the reader want to book the trip before finishing the article.

A Family Ski Adventure in the Himalayas

Why can't we go skiing in Austria, like everybody else? the writer's wife asked. Instead, they were in Kashmir, where the powder's thick, the crowds are thin and the territory is, well, disputed. Last winter, as I was riding in a car with my family through the Kashmir Valley, the driver's phone rang.
