This winter has seen a large number of incidents involving skiers and avalanches. This past Tuesday, Feb. 19, another victim fell to an avalanche not far from Telluride, CO.

Salvador Garcia-Atance, 47, was backcountry skiing, skinning up the Bear Creek trail out of Telluride. During the early evening, he was reported missing by family members.

San Miguel County Sheriff's Office, local Search and Rescue, and Telluride Ski Patrol with K9s began a search Tuesday but had to call off their effort due to nightfall.

The search began again Wednesday morning. Search teams were able to locate Garcia-Atance, though he was dead.

This is the fifth person killed in an avalanche this year in Colorado.
