Leave it to Red Bull to come up with a new competition format that should be more than a little cool to watch. Red Bull Raid involves a new competition format that combines both going up and coming down the mountain and it's heading to Squaw Valley, CA on April 13.

This new competition format begins with each contestant, using either skis or a splitboard, making a hike to the top of the mountain with points being awarded based on the order each contestant gets to the top. The first person to the top gets 100 points with each position after that getting a 1-point deduction.

After the climb, the contestants will then be competing for another 100 points judged similar to a freeride competition. A panel of three judges will watch and score each contestant's descent based on style, line, and control. In the end, the ascent and descent scores will be added for a point total.

The competition will include four categories, separating the men and the women and skiers and splitboarders.

Another great part of this competition is that it is open to anyone. Even if you aren't a pro, but you think your big mountain lines and skinning skill are up to par, you can register to participate in the competition. However, only 60 will actually compete.

If you are interested in registering for the competition or would like more information on this new format, head over to the Red Bull Raid site.
