I have found a bit of news that might interest those who are local to the Aspen area or those who might visit there from time to time.

It seems one of the locals was ripping off skis and reselling them. This is not a crime that is unheard of in a ski town, but this guy went bigger than I have ever heard.

It seems that he had an operation of stealing gear from a ski shop that he ran until another employee noticed inventory numbers being off. After an investigation by police, Derek Johnson, and former city councilman is now facing a lot of charges.

Like I said, this isn't a new crime. If you've been around a ski town or hill enough you've heard of someone trying a similar scam. But, to be able to rack up over $2 million in stolen gear has to be some kind of record.

There is a lot of local information here, so I haven't done a write up of this story myself. However, here is an article The Aspen Times that tells the story in its entirety.

Cops: Former city councilman stole $2.4 million from Aspen Skiing Co.

A former Aspen city councilman and mayoral candidate allegedly stole and sold more than $2.4 million worth of skis, snowboards and other goods while working as an Aspen Skiing Co. executive for 17 years, according to court documents.
