It could be said that most of those who ride lifts take them for granted. For most, it is just a way to get to the top of the mountain. But, there are some lifts out there that could be the reason for going to the mountain in and of themselves. The folks over at CNN decided to put together a list of what could be the 10 most extreme lifts in the world. Here is what they came up with.

Now, some of these lifts will test a person's mettle long before they get off and hit the slopes. In the picture used here is the Aiguille du Midi, a lift that has been seen in countless ski films over the years. If a pro has gone to Chamonix to film, this lift was in that film. Just to see a picture of it could start one's heart pounding and perhaps even scare someone into not going up there. It's also an engineering feat right up there with the Great Pyramid.

As for the whole list, they could all be considered extreme, but also some of the coolest lifts one could ever ride on their ski trips. The Jungfrau railway would make for a great story and an awesome ride for those who wish to ski Switzerland. Also, the Jackson Hole Tram is about as iconic as any lift in the United States. All in all, any of these makes for an adventure whether a person skis down or not.

For more information on each lift, with pictures, you can head to the article by following the link below. If you have any personal experience with any of these lifts, don't hesitate to tell your story here in the comments.

The world's most extreme ski lifts

(CNN) - Ski lifts, like skiers, come in all shapes and sizes, with varying degrees of technical merit, but only a few have the X factor. Whether it's a revolutionary design, nerve-jangling ride or historic aura, some lifts offer more than just a fast-track to the top of the mountain.
