Guadalajara Took A Whooping -- Mexican City Covered In Ice
This past weekend summertime hail made the news when a hail event gave Houston, TX its new record for snowfall in the month of June. However, that was only a trace amount. Further south the city of Guadalajara, Mexico also received some summer hail, but it was much more of an issue than just a trace amount.
Social media has been buzzing over the weekend with photos and videos of what looks like an ice age. Reports from the area have stated that there was from three to five feet of ice in some parts of the city, making a scene that most locals have never seen before. This includes Jalisco Governor Enrique Alfaro Ramirez, who described the scene in this tweet, translated as "Very early, before going to the CDMX for the start of the National Guard, I was in the place to evaluate the situation and I witnessed scenes that I had never seen before: the hail more than a meter high, and then we asked ourselves if Climate change exists."
Luckily, there were no injuries or deaths reported as a result of the event. As you can see below, there was even a chance for smiles and to have a little fun.
“Hail depth from the storm [alone] couldn’t have been that strong,” Andrews said. “That great depth could be accounted for that the hail was running off street like in a flash flood and accumulated in a low spot.” (By New York Times Art.)#Guadalajara #GuadalajaraHail pic.twitter.com/dBqFnhHoO7— jserranoU23 (@JavierSerrano) July 2, 2019
