I've Answered The Question -- How Many Places Can I Ski Within 50-Miles Of The HQ?

It was only a couple of days ago that I took to social media, both Twitter and Facebook, to post about a thought I had that morning.

After thinking about it for a little bit, and after a couple of replies to the post, I decided to take a look at how many hills there are to ski within a 50-mile radius. I'll be honest, there are actually more than I thought there would be. I found that there are a total of 30 hills within that distance and with the help of caltopo.com, I was able to put together the little map that you see below.

Now, just for the frame of reference, the center point of the map is on Hartford, VT. That's currently where I live, so that's also the current location of Ski Rex Media HQ. From here, the range ring, which is out to 50 miles, covers a good chunk of Vermont, part of New Hampshire, and a tiny, little bit of New York state, though there aren't any ski areas in that tiny bit. No, everything on this map is in New England.

Also, these aren't all big ski resorts. Yes, there are a few of them on the list, of course. But, there are also some of the smaller, independent hills. There are even a few single run, rope-tow, local community ski areas, too. I added every hill that I possibly could with only a few exceptions. That would be those areas that are closed, backcountry areas, school campus ski areas, and private ski areas. Although, while I was putting this together, I realized that I might be able to get a couple of those private areas. I'll save those another map or project.

Have I skied many of these 30? That answer is an honest no. Though I have gotten a few of these, most of what I have skied is just outside the range ring and areas in New York and Pennsylvania don't count here.

I find it kind of interesting to see what I have to work with on any given day to get some turns in. Even more interesting is that there are a few mega passes that are covered on that map. There are hills that are Epic, Ikon, the new Indy Pass, and the Freedom Pass.

I think what this comes down to is that I'm in a pretty good centralized area for being a ski fan. I have hills of all shapes and sizes and price points all within a two-hour drive of where I am typing this right now. It could be a very interesting ski season.
