CopenHill -- A Ski Hill On A Waste Management Plant Now Open In Denmark
It was this past June that Jesper Tjäder was able to get first tracks at a brand new ski hill in Denmark that was built on top of a futuristic-looking and operating waste management plant. It looked to be everything one could want in an urban skiing/snowboarding and outdoor sports center. Now the time has come to not only see this ski slope but to experience it. CopenHill at the Amager Bakke power plant is now open to the public.
Jesper Tjäder Gets First Tracks At CopenHill -- A Slope On The Roof Of A Waste-to-Energy Plant In Copenhagen
A beautiful building designed to take waste-to-energy technologies into the future, pushing Copenhagen, Denmark towards the goal of being carbon-neutral by the year 2025. An admirable goal to be sure, but that's not the coolest thing about this building. This building was designed to be part of the community, part of the city.
As part of the city of Copenhagen's plan to be a 100% carbon neutral city by the year 2025, the Amager Bakke plant was built to be one of the world's most advanced waste-to-energy facilities. Part of the design of this facility was to be a part of the community at large, which is the driving force that brings CopenHill to live.
The ski slope, like the runs at any mountain or resort, is multi-purpose. It is a 1,476 foot (450 meters) general ski trail with difficulties for all levels of skiers/snowboarders, a freestyle park, and a timed slalom course, which is serviced by four lifts. But, skiing isn't the only available activity. the facility also offers a climbing wall that reaches the top, or "summit", of the building at 280 feet (85 meters), making it the tallest artificial climbing wall in North Europe. There is also the hiking trail, which runs alongside the ski slope and leads to the top of the building.
Once you have reached the top of the “mountain” there will be a restaurant serving healthy Danish dishes, and at the bottom of the slope you will find our ski center, comprising a café/afterski-bar, ski rental, and our Salomon brand store. From there, you choose your way back down.
This is a brilliant use of a state-of-art building set in the center of a major city. For more information or to book ski time if you're going to be in the city, you can head to the CopenHill website, linked below.
