Derek Johnson, The SkiCo Thief, Sentenced To Prison
Derek Johnson, who was a former Aspen Skiing Co. executive, and Aspen City Council member has been sentenced to six years in prison for stealing skis and other merchandise from the company and reselling it online, a scheme he ran for more than a decade.
Johnson pleaded guilty to one count felony theft between $100,000 and $1 million this past November, according to a report from the Post Independent. That charge left Johnson facing a prison sentence of four to 12 years.
His wife, Kerri Johnson, has also pleaded guilty to felony theft in connection with the scheme. According to the same report, she will likely serve a probation sentence with a chance of jail time in the Pitkin County Jail. She is scheduled to be sentenced next month.
The couple also has to pay back Skico in the amount of $250,000 as part of their punishment.
All told, it is alleged that the pair stole and sold close to $2.4 million dollars worth of gear, including skis and snowboards. The gear was then sold online, via eBay.
