Ignore The Haters -- Ski In Your Jeans
Let's all be honest here. You've seen a person skiing or riding in their jeans. Let's take it a step further and say that there are some who will read this who have skied in their jeans. It can also be said that the person writing this has skied in their jeans. For a lot of folks, it really is just an oddity that pops up on the slopes every now and again, but does that make it something to be made fun of? No, no it doesn't.
The inspiration for this piece came from another piece from The Wall Street Journal website. The wonderful thing about the article is that the author doesn't take sides. The article really just give an overview of skiing in one's jeans and quotes from those who have an opinion on the subject, and both sides of the subject, at that. But, I'm going to take a side on this one.
I admit to not knowing anything about fashion. I just don't understand it. I can say that most of my purchases, when it comes to winter gear, have been made from a more practical mindset. With that said, I do try to pick up stuff that looks good to me. Does skiing in jeans fit into either of those? No, not really.
We all know that skiing or snowboarding in denim has almost no practical use. Denim isn't all that warm, it doesn't really retain the heat that one does generate, and it certainly isn't waterproof. The best one could argue is that denim is tough and might not rip in fall.
As for looking good, I like the look of jeans and wear a pair almost every day. I hope that I look good in them, but that isn't for me to decide. However, I can say there are those out there that look fantastic in the right pair of jeans. But, a pair of jeans on the slopes looks totally out of place, especially in the 21st century. For some, that equates to not looking good. For me, I think that's all the more reason to do it.
There's nothing wrong with being 100% different or unique, even on the ski slopes. So, why not do something that people typically don't do? Especially since skiing in one's jeans does have a nostalgic and throwback quality to it. Also, it's just kind of awesome in a way that's hard to explain. It's like when I say "Embrace The Fall", one should embrace the not so awesome as awesome.
I don' t know, I just think there is something to the idea of skiing in jeans. It really isn't the best choice, but there is still something awesome about it and I'm sure I will end up doing it again. Actually, there are probably a lot of people out there that see the awesomeness and will do it again. I mean, let's look at it from the point of view of visiting an indoor facility. Would you want to carry all of your gear to one of those places? For the most part, of course, you would, but there may come a day when just getting up that lift in the jeans you have on will be the better part of valor.

Stop Skiing in Jeans. It's Not the 1970s Anymore.
PITY THE denim-wearing skier. The bottom line is that "skiing in jeans is a terrible idea," said James Fox, 48, a digital librarian in Acton, Mass., and lifelong skier-turned-snowboarder. As he pointed out, jeans are neither waterproof nor insulating. Those who brave the bluff in jeans are often inexperienced bunny-hill bumblers who don't know any better.
