Old School Big Mountain And Freestyle Skier Dean Cummings Arrested On Murder Charge
Multiple media outlets are starting to report on the story of the murder arrest of a top name in the big mountain and freestyle skiing worlds.
Dean Cummings, age 54, was arrested after an altercation that left a second man dead.
According to a report from the Albuquerque Journal, via a statement from Sandoval County spokesman Stephen Montoya, Cummings is charged with an open count of murder in the February 29th death of Guillermo Arriola.
Cummings reported the incident himself, having called 911 around 5:45 P.M. that day, saying that he had been attacked by Arriola and that he shot him in self-defense. When Sandoval County Sheriff's Deputies arrived on the scene, they found Cummings outside of a mobile home in San Luis, New Mexico, with Arriola dead inside.
Cummings has been well-known in the big mountain and freestyle skiing world for many years. According to Powder Magazine, Cummings is a former member of the U.S. Freestyle Ski Team and winner of the 1991 Rocky Mountain Mogul Championship, as well as other accomplishments in the professional competition realm. He also claims more the 220 first descents, a large number of which are in Alaska's Chugach range, where he owned and operated Valdez H20 Heli Adventures.
