The Season Restarts Today At Mt. Baldy, CA -- The First Hill Open Post-Corona Restrictions

As the talk of reopening recreation areas begins to ramp up across the United States, one ski mountain in California is not just talking about it, but actually doing it. Mt. Baldy, CA is officially the first mountain to reopen here in the U.S. and it all begins today, April 22. But, there are plenty of restrictions, so don't just head out to the mountain.

"We are taking the COVID-19 crisis very seriously. Mt Baldy Resort is a unique all-season mountain resort and is well designed to accommodate social distancing guidelines. In addition, we are implementing several policy changes that will help to ensure the safety and health of our guests and staff. Similar to how a golf course operates Mt Baldy will check-in a maximum of 4 individuals at 10-minute intervals. 1 Day Alpine Ticketed guests will have access to Lift #2 and #3 from that time until closing. In stark contrast to a golf course (150 acres), Mt Baldy Resort (800 acres) has more than 4x the area and will be operating at less than 10% of occupancy under this plan."

"Mask or face covering consistent with Order of the Health Officer of the County of San Bernardino County for the Control of COVID-19 must be worn at all times." - From The Mt. Baldy Website

Beyond these restrictions, there are others that the mountain and guests have to follow to make this work. These include only accepting guests with reservations for 1-Day Alpine Lift Tickets and Mt. Baldy Season Pass Holders. No other tickets, passes, or the like will be accepted, nor will there be a full guest service staff on hand. There will also be parking restrictions requiring vehicles to be parked a minimum of three vehicle widths apart. Vehicles found closer than that will be towed. The mountain is also asking visitors to ride the lift alone or with someone they have been quarantined with, as well as all other suggested social distance guidelines.

The mountain is also asking that only advanced and expert skiers and riders visit during these times. According to a conditions report from Mt. Baldy from last night, "Expect smooth soft spring corn conditions Wednesday. There will be no grooming tonight, expect off-piste untracked cream corn conditions. EXPERIENCED ADVANCED & ABOVE SKIERS AND RIDERS ONLY. Now is not the time to come learn to ski or ride."

It could be a difficult and frustrating day for those operating and visiting Mt. Baldy, but it is an opportunity to get in some springtime skiing and riding. Just as the mountain asks, please be on your best behavior and follow the rules. One person can ruin this for everyone. Don't be that guy.
