Mountain Bikers Were Dodging Bullets Near Steamboat Springs, CO

As overdramatic as the headline for this piece is, it does come with some truth. This past Wednesday, two mountain bikers were riding a trail on Buffalo Pass near Steamboat Springs, CO, which lead to the two riders accidentally coming under fire.

Just after seven o'clock this past Wednesday evening, July 29th, Cole Sibelius and his friend Riley Schumm were enjoying a bike ride when they heard gunfire nearby. This sent to the two riders ducking for cover until the shooting stopped, as some of the bullets fired hit very close to their position. This comes from a report in The Denver Post.

Neither rider was hurt, though obviously very shaken by the incident. They were able to report the incident, to which the Routt County Sheriff's Office responded. Deputies were able to locate those who were firing the shots.

The shooting came from three men that had been drinking that night. Though three handguns were found at the scene, all of the firearms were legal. It would seem that the three shooters had just been acting irresponsibly that evening.

While all of the handguns were legal, it is not legal for any person in the state of Colorado to possess and use a firearm while under the influence of alcohol or drugs. As the three men were reported to have been drinking, this constitutes a Class 2 misdemeanor, which could bring up to a $1,000 fine or a year in prison.

Deputies issued a court summons to all three men for the incident.

Please remember to act safely and responsibly when using a firearm. Only shoot at designated targets that are open and obviously safe. Also, while in many places the use of firearms outside or a firing range is legal, a firing range will always be the safest choice.
